Every May since 1989, we give recognition and tribute to all the farmers and fisherfolk in the country, highlighting their role as partners of the government and the country’s backhand in poverty alleviation and food security program.
This, in pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 33 s.1989, declaring the month of May of every year as the Farmers and Fisherfolk Month, signed by the last President Corazon C. Aquino.
Also, to give our fisherfolk a firsthand experience of the agency’s operations, a national and regional fisherfolk leaders shall act as BFAR Director at the national and regional levels during the month-long celebration, dubbed as “Mangingisdang Direktor para sa mas Matatag na Balikatan”. Mrs. Nena S. Salon of Initao, Misamis Oriental is the Regional Fisherfolk Director for 2019.
For 2019, various activities are also lined up for the whole region to promote and strengthen the fisheries sector, such as: fingerling dispersals, conduct of trainings, IEC (Information, Education, and Communication) activities, participations in LGU-led activities (Fisherfolk’s Day, Lambangus Festival, coastal clean-up, etc.), and sports activities for our fisherfolk during the BFAR-10 Closing Program.
