November 26, 2024

The 2024 National Science, Technology, and Innovation Week (NSTW) will be held in Cagayan de Oro City from November 27-30, 2024, marking a significant milestone as it is the first time the event will be hosted in Mindanao. Organized by the Department of Science and Technology-Region 10 (DOST 10), this year’s NSTW will emphasize S&T innovations, with special focus on technologies that contribute to the green economy and biodiversity.

One of the key highlights of the event will be the active participation of five Mindanao consortia: NOMCAARRD, CCAARRD, SMAARRDEC, SOXAARRDEC, and WESMAARRDEC. These consortia, along with their respective Consortium Member Institutions (CMIs), will showcase a variety of sustainable technologies and products in the Agriculture, Aquatic, and Natural Resources (AANR) sectors, which aim to increase awareness and encourage the adoption of green economy practices across the region.

This year’s theme, β€œSiyensya, Teknolohiya, at Inobasyon: Kabalikat sa Matatag, Maginhawa, at Panatag na Kinabukasan” with the sub-theme β€œProviding Solutions and Opening Opportunities in the Green Economy”, will serve as the backdrop for the diverse exhibits and activities. Technologies presented will include innovations in waste management, renewable energy, and biodiversity preservation, designed to support sustainable development and foster eco-friendly practices.

The Mindanao consortia will feature a range of cutting-edge technologies, such as:
β€’Pyanggang (Native Chicken) – A sustainable poultry farming innovation by NOMCAARRD
β€’Squopia (Squash Hopia) – A unique product combining squash and hopia by WESMAARRDEC
β€’Safitek Cocodehusker – A coconut processing technology by WESMAARRDEC
β€’Sweet Potato Flour and TazSCure Natural Fungicide – A nutritious food product and natural pest control solution by NOMCAARRD
β€’Sea Cucumber Production Technology – Sustainable marine technology from NOMCAARRD

The Limketkai Center will host the exhibits, where over 150 innovations will be showcased. Visitors can also attend 33 fora and technology pitching sessions, including specialized discussions on green economy and biodiversity.

Mindanao consortia will actively engage with participants through various techno fora scheduled throughout the event. These fora will cover topics like sustainable agriculture, eco-tourism, biosecurity, and renewable energy, with presentations from technology developers and researchers from the consortia. Notable sessions will feature discussions on the TazSCure Fungicide, Coconut Climber, and Artificial Intelligence in Rubberβ€”innovations that aim to support both farmers and local industries.

These activities are designed to foster collaboration between farmers, fisherfolk, MSMEs, investors, researchers, and students, helping them understand and adopt the showcased technologies.

The NSTW 2024 will attract a diverse audience, with over 10,000 participants expected, including local government units, startups, academia, and the general public. Pre-registration through the NSTW app is encouraged, but walk-ins are also welcome. As an open event, admission is free, and attendees can also access live streams of the activities through the DOST-10 Facebook page.

The event aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those focused on poverty reduction, innovation, and environmental sustainability. Through this event, the Mindanao consortia aim to promote science-based solutions that contribute to both economic growth and environmental conservation.
