NOMCAARRD Team Visits PTRI Technology Center – Misamis Oriental!

On Sept. 1, 2022, the team from Northern Mindanao Consortium for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources and Research and Development (NOMCAARRD), headed by its Director, Dr. Emmanuel P. Leaño, visited the PTRI Technology Center – Misamis Oriental (TC-MO) to witness the first multi-end silk processing facility in Mindanao.

NOMCAARRD and DOST-PTRI have exchanged several face-to-face meetings and online communications about the latter’s interest in membership reapplication in the regional consortium. The team was ushered to the filature facility, where machines and equipment to reel silk from the cocoons are in place.
DOST-PTRI’s reentry to the regional research and development consortium will strengthen the support for silk as a fiber crop. This is expected to bring silk into the consortium’s R&D priorities and integrate it into R&D programs.
At least six (6) regions are now considered to make silk a priority fiber crop in their respective consortia. DOST-PTRI is looking at Regions 1, 2, 6, 10, and CAR for local silk engagements primarily because silk production activities are currently available in these regions. CARAGA’s interest will expand the reach of silk production in the eastern part of Mindanao.
